Methodology
Thermal Protocol covers home recovery equipment — primarily cold plunges and saunas — in the $1,000+ price band. Every recommendation on this site is the output of the same evaluation process, applied consistently across brands. This page explains that process, the criteria we score against, and how we handle the parts of the buying decision that aren't quantifiable.
What we cover
A product is in scope if it costs at least $1,000, is intended for home installation, and falls into one of these categories: cold plunges, traditional saunas, infrared saunas, sauna blankets, red-light panels, compression boots, or PEMF mats. We do not cover supplements, mobile apps, or sub-$300 accessories. We make no therapeutic claims and do not position any product as a treatment for a medical condition.
How we score
Every product is evaluated against a category-specific rubric of measurable criteria. For cold plunges this includes minimum reachable temperature, time to target temperature, filtration system, capacity, electrical requirements, footprint, materials, and warranty terms. For saunas it includes maximum cabin temperature, heater type and wattage, EMF exposure (for infrared), wood species, seating capacity, electrical requirements, and warranty terms. Each criterion is sourced from the manufacturer's published spec sheet, cross-checked against third-party documentation where available, and re-verified on each major price or model revision.
How we rank
The recommendation engine matches products to a buyer's stated constraints in two passes. First, hard filters eliminate products that cannot meet the constraints (budget ceiling, indoor-only placement, available electrical service, person capacity). Second, the remaining products are scored on soft preferences and ranked by best fit. The output is the top three matches with a written justification for each, including the specific criteria that drove the ranking.
Editorial independence
Thermal Protocol is funded by affiliate commissions on products purchased through links on this site. Brand relationships have no influence on which products are included, evaluated, or recommended. We do not accept payment for inclusion, placement, or favorable ranking. A brand declining an affiliate relationship does not remove its products from our coverage; the relationship simply isn't monetized on our side.
Every page that contains affiliate links carries a disclosure in the footer, in compliance with 16 CFR Part 255. Outbound affiliate links are markedrel="sponsored nofollow"so search engines treat them appropriately.
Pricing data
Prices and availability change frequently. We display the manufacturer's listed street price at the time of last verification, alongside MSRP where the brand publishes one. We do not guarantee that the price shown matches the price at checkout. Always confirm the final price on the brand's site before purchase.
